Medical surgical RNs or sometimes known as med-surg RNs provide care for patients before and after medical procedures and manage a broad and complex range of needs. Med surg nurses work in a number of different healthcare settings and often maintain a higher patient caseload than other nurses.
Medical surgical is sometimes referred to as the foundation of health care because it’s a really job to learn about the different aspects of nursing. You will learn and maintain an extensive knowledge of skills, and become versatile and flexible when facing different situations. Patients in this area of nursing vary from ambulatory to total care. Med surg RNs may deal with patients with acute to chronic diseases needing management, diagnosis not limited to a single body system, and patients across the life-span.
Med surg nurses must be able to coordinate organize and prioritize. They must be competent and knowledgeable in guiding patients and their families, integrate discharge planning into the patient’s daily care, collaborate with other healthcare members, and must be able to learn new technology as it relates to nursing.
